Background Information
This Shiraz honours Thomas Newte Yule, who in 1836 was part of a syndicate of three British army officers who together purchased the northern half of a large land-holding in the Swan Valley. The property was named Houghton after the most senior of the trio – Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton. During Thomas Yule’s management, the first vines were established. This Shiraz is sourced from the Frankland River wine-growing region - renowned for producing some of the best examples of Shiraz in Western Australia.

Vineyards
The Shiraz grapes for this wine are grown on the Justin vineyard in the Frankland River region of Western Australia. Sourced from vines planted in 1970, the fruit contributes to producing a wine of considerable depth and complexity truly reflecting its place of origin.

Vintage
The 2015 vintage was a strong, red vintage in Frankland River. Moderate winter rainfall set the vines up leading into the ripening period. Extended warm and dry conditions throughout summer meant that flavour accumulation in the berries was gradual while adequate water reserves ensured the fruit retained freshness.

Winemaking
The fruit for this wine was hand harvested and hand sorted before crushing to small traditional open top fermenters. 15% whole bunch inclusion was incorporated into the fermenters and the ferment was conducted with indigenous yeast. This process contributes to the texture and complexity of the resulting wine. At dryness, the wine was pressed to tank before transfer to barrel for malolactic fermentation.
Maturation in Burgundy coopered French oak barriques and puncheons lasted for 14 months before the components were assessed and blended prior to filtration and bottling. The resultant wine displays lovely perfumed fruit, vibrant flavour and elegance.

Tasting Notes
Dark ruby red in colour, this wine displays bright, lifted blueberry and raspberry fruits. Hints of black pepper and aniseed with nuances of mocha and spicy vanillin oak round off the bouquet. The palate is full-bodied with intense fruit flavours. A firm tannin structure with a soft acid balance frame a rich mid palate that leads to a long and sustained finish. While this wine will drink well now, it will benefit from extended cellaring over the next 10 – 15 years"
